How it works

Levemir is a soluble, long-acting insulin analogue with a prolonged duration of effect used as a basal insulin. The blood glucose lowering effect of Levemir is due to the facilitated uptake of glucose following binding of insulin to receptors on muscle and fat cells and to the simultaneous inhibition of glucose output from the liver.

• Disorientation • seizures, fits or convulsions • loss of consciousness • skin rashes over a large part of the body • shortness of breath, wheezing • swelling of the face, lips or tongue • fast pulse • sweating • hypos (mild to moderate) • pain, redness, swelling, hives, inflammation, bruising or itching at the injection site. • when you first start your insulin treatment you may get visual problems or swollen hands and feet.

Drug Interactions

• Other medicines used for the treatment of diabetes • monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI) - used for the treatment of depression • alpha blockers - used to treat high blood pressure and to relieve difficulty in passing urine caused by an enlarged prostate • non-selective beta blockers • ACE inhibitors • salicylates e.g. aspirin • anabolic steroids • sulphonamides • quinine • quinidine • glucocorticoids • oral contraceptives • diuretics e.g. thiazides, frusemide or ethacrynic acid • thyroid hormones • sympathomimetics • growth hormone • danzol • oxymetholone • diazoxide .

Indication

The insulin detemir is a long-acting insulin used to treat diabetes mellitus.

When not to Use

It is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to insulin detemir or any of its excipients. Reactions have included anaphylaxis .

Levemir Flexpen Precautions

Precaution

Glucose monitoring is essential for all patients receiving insulin therapy. Changes to an insulin regimen should be made cautiously and only under medical supervision.

Levemir Flexpen Warnings

Warning 1

Changes in insulin strength, manufacturer, type, or method of administration may result in the need for a change in the insulin dose or an adjustment of concomitant anti-diabetic treatment.

Warning 2

As with all insulin preparations, the time course of action for detemir may vary in different individuals or at different times in the same individual and is dependent on many conditions, including the local blood supply, local temperature, and physical activity.

Warning 3

Hypoglycemia is the most common adverse reaction of insulin therapy, including insulin detemir. The risk of hypoglycemia increases with intensive glycemic control. Patients must be educated to recognize and manage hypoglycemia.
