How it works

Norfloxacin is a quinolone carboxylic acid antibacterial agent for oral administration. Norfloxacin inhibits bacterial deoxyribonucleic acid synthesis and is bactericidal. At the molecular level, three specific actions have been attributed to norfloxacin in the inhibition of E.coli cells: 1. inhibition of the ATP-dependent DNA supercoiling reaction catalyzed by DNA gyrase, 2. inhibition of the relaxation of supercoiled DNA, 3. promotion of double-stranded DNA breakage.

Side Effects

• Nausea • headache • dizziness. • Severe stomach pain • symptoms of severe sunburn, such as redness, itching, pain, swelling or blistering • pain, tenderness, swelling, or redness of muscles, joints or tendons • pain, burning, tingling, numbness, and/or weakness in your arms or legs • bleeding or bruising more easily than normal, nose bleeds • signs of anaemia, such as tiredness, being short of breath and looking pale • numbness or tingling in fingers or toes • any signs of mental disturbance, such as confusion or hallucinations • worsening of myasthenia gravis symptoms • visual disturbances • changes in your hearing • decreased feeling or sensitivity, especially in the skin.

Drug Interactions

Nitrofurantoin , erythromycin , theophylline , cyclosporin , warfarin , glibenclamide , probenecid , amiodarone, procainamide and sotalol, cisapride , tricyclic antidepressants , non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs , iron or zinc supplements, and multivitamins containing them , antacids , sucralfate , didanosine .

Indication

It is used to treat some bacterial infections, such as : Urinary tract infections (uncomplicated urinary tract infections including cystitis and complicated urinary tract infections) - Sexually transmitted diseases (uncomplicated urethral and cervical gonorrhea due to Neisseria gonorrhea) - Prostatitis (due to Escherichia coli) .

When not to Use

Do not take if - You have an allergy to Norfloxacin, other quinolone antibiotics or any of the ingredients listed. Symptoms of an allergic reaction to Norfloxacin may include itchiness, hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, and/or throat (which may cause difficulty in breathing or swallowing), muscle pain or tenderness, or joint pain. - You are pregnant or breast-feeding. - You have had pain, inflammation or rupture of tendons after taking quinolone antibiotics.

Floxin Tablets Precautions

Precaution

During therapy with this medicine, patients should be reminded to drink sufficient amounts of fluids to maintain adequate hydration in order to avoid possible development of crystalluria.

Floxin Tablets Warnings

Warning 1

Norfloxacin should be used with caution in individuals with a history of convulsions or known factors that predispose to seizures. Convulsions have been reported rarely in patients receiving norfloxacin; however, a causal relationship to norfloxacin has not been established .

Warning 2

Photosensitivity reactions have been observed in patients exposed to sunlight while receiving quinolone antibiotics. While taking norfloxacin, excessive exposure to sunlight should be avoided and therapy discontinued if photosensitivity should occur.

Warning 3

As with other quinolones, tendinitis and/or tendon rupture have been observed rarely in patients taking norfloxacin, especially when corticosteroids are taken concomitantly. If a patient develops symptoms of tendinitis and/or tendon rupture, norfloxacin should be discontinued immediately and the patient advised to seek appropriate medical management.
